When President Joe Biden assumed office on Wednesday, he inherited a nation with 2.7 million homeowners in mortgage forbearance plans—and the raft of protections helping them keep their homes about to expire.

Biden has already emphasized the importance of continuing homeowner protections through the Covid-19 crisis. “Failing to take additional action will lead to a wave of evictions and foreclosures in the coming months,” his administration wrote in its proposal for Covid-19 aid legislation earlier this month.
